“The Story of a Race Driver” profiles Billy Krauss, a professional American race driver who co-owns a motorcycle shop funded by his racing earnings, and traces his journey from a racing-obsessed childhood — his father built award-winning racers — through his rise to prominence, including a 1960 Riverside Grand Prix win over Sterling Moss in a Maserati. The film follows him through two frustrating races: at the 1962 Pacific Grand Prix at Laguna Seca, he leads the Formula Junior race for eight laps before gearbox trouble forces him to retire, and at Nassau’s Speed Week, he drives a Ford Cobra and remarkably works his way up through four Ferraris to challenge for second place, only to run out of gas on lap 15 due to a miscalculation made during hasty pre-race repairs. Despite these setbacks, Krauss remains philosophical and forward-looking, embodying the professional racer’s mindset — shaking off defeat quickly and focusing on the next opportunity — and the film closes with him testing a Stingray and preparing for the upcoming Daytona races, driven by his singular desire not just to compete, but to be the best.
