Ranger IX Television Pictures of the Moon (1965)
Ranger 9, the last spacecraft in the Ranger series, was launched on March 21, 1965, and impacted the Moon on March 24, landing just 3 miles from its predicted point in the Alonsus crater. The spacecraft was equipped with six television cameras that transmitted a total of 6,150 images back to Earth. The cameras captured detailed images of the lunar surface, including craters and highland areas, as the spacecraft approached the Moon. The final images showed the impact point and features of the surrounding terrain, with the spacecraft traveling at nearly 6,000 miles per hour upon impact.
