This film tells the story of two families, the Fishers and the Stones, who become neighbors. The initial interactions are strained, particularly between the patriarchs, Mr. Fisher and Mr. Stone, who have differing views on child-rearing and religion. Mr. Stone, an atheist, is resistant to religious upbringing for his children, Bill and Betty, while Mr. Fisher strongly believes in the importance of faith and church. A significant incident occurs when Mr. Stone’s son, Pete, gets into trouble for reckless driving and a hit-and-run accident. This event prompts Mr. Stone to re-evaluate his parenting, and with guidance from Mr. Fisher, he begins to understand the importance of early spiritual guidance for his children. The film concludes with a hopeful note, suggesting that with care and attention, much like tending to a rose bush, young people can be guided toward a positive path, and the Stone family starts to embrace a more traditional, faith-based approach to life.
