Old Family Album Goes Modern, The (silent, 1938)
This charming home movie documents the development of a baby boy from infancy to around eighteen months. Captured in various stages, the film shows the baby engaging in typical childhood moments, from dunking a doughnut in milk while seated in a highchair to falling asleep as his eyes slowly close. The boy playfully bounces in a harness, drops toys from his highchair, and explores Easter toys on a blanket, including a rabbit doll and tinsel. He joyfully splashes in a makeshift backyard kiddy pool and makes a mess with a birthday cake, smearing frosting all over himself. In later clips, the curious toddler tries to understand a wall-mounted telephone and endures a tearful first haircut in a barber’s chair. This documentary captures both tender and humorous snapshots of early childhood.
