            Instrument Unit (1960s)
The Apollo Saturn V’s Instrument Unit serves as the brain of the launch vehicle, measuring 22 feet in diameter and 3 feet high. It contains essential electronic and electrical equipment for navigation, guidance, and control of the spacecraft. The unit monitors flight operations, temperature control, and communications with ground control while constantly adjusting for changing flight conditions. It computes necessary corrections to the Saturn V’s engines to ensure it reaches the moon efficiently, controlling thrust direction and stabilizing the craft during flight. After completing its tasks, the Instrument Unit is jettisoned, having successfully navigated the spacecraft.
