Holding The Reins (1962)

This film describes a mother, Mrs. Carter, helping her daughter Barbara develop her language skills through various activities and games. The mother and father have become skilled at providing a specific time and place for concentrated activity, and they know that to be successful, they need to mix enjoyment with learning. The film also mentions that the mother uses different materials and activities each day to keep Barbara’s interest and that she uses a checklist to ensure that everything is prepared for the next day’s lesson. The film also touches on the importance of parents guiding and making decisions for their children, as Barbara doesn’t yet understand the importance of developing language. The mother also tries to avoid any other points of controversy and manages the situation so Barbara has the choice of the activity or boredom.
