[General at Big Shanty Centennial]

This is the 100th anniversary of the General locomotive at Big Shanty in Georgia.

The General is a historic 4-4-0 steam locomotive built in 1855 by Rogers, Ketchum & Grosvenor for the Western & Atlantic Railroad. It gained fame during the Civil War when it was stolen by Union spies in the Great Locomotive Chase. After serving various roles and undergoing several restorations, it was retired in 1891 and eventually displayed at the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History in Kennesaw, Georgia, where it remains today. The locomotive is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been featured in various films and exhibitions over the years.
