Conflagration (1975)
On October 13, 1973, a devastating fire broke out in Chelsea, Massachusetts, fueled by high winds and dry conditions. The blaze ignited in a wood-frame warehouse, quickly spreading to nearby buildings and outdoor storage areas. Despite the rapid response of the Chelsea Fire Department and mutual aid from 69 communities, the fire escalated into a massive conflagration, consuming 20% of the city and creating a firestorm-like environment. The emergency response involved over 700 firefighters and the coordination of local, state, and federal agencies to provide relief and shelter for displaced residents. Remarkably, there were no fatalities, but the fire left many homeless and without jobs. In the aftermath, the city focused on urban renewal projects to prevent future disasters.
