The Magic Pipes (1976)

This film tells the story of Herm, the organ master of Kubstein, a charming Austrian town that values tradition. The town’s identity is deeply tied to the majestic organ in its castle, which plays at specific times to signal that all is well. Two children, Ysef and Elizabeth, ask Herm a hypothetical question about what would happen if the organ didn’t play. This thought troubles Herm, and he experiences a strange dream or vision where a “What if?” button appears on the organ console, causing the music to play uncontrollably fast and then backward, disrupting the town. He is ultimately woken by the children, relieved to find that the organ is playing normally and the “What if?” button is gone, allowing the town to continue in its traditional harmony.

Keywords: Organ, tradition, music, Austria, Kubstein, children, expectation, disruption, harmony, dream.
