[Solar Max Repair Mission]

This film follows the development of the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) from research and development at Martin Marietta Aerospace to its use by NASA as standard space shuttle equipment. The MMU gives astronauts the ability to move around outside the Orbiter and perform a variety of tasks in the space environment, such as servicing and inspection of satellites. When the Solar Maximum Mission satellite is disabled, the MMU is used to repair and restore the satellite, providing an opportunity to prove the value of spacecraft repair on orbit. The MMU and the remote manipulation system of the space shuttle allow the mission to be successful, expanding scientists’ understanding of the sun’s explosive nature and its effects on Earth.
