First Twenty Years (Part 1)
A selection of turn-of-the-century motion pictures from the Library of Congress’ paper print collection, meticulously restored by preservationist Kemp R. Niver. These rare works, originally produced by the Thomas A. Edison Company and captured by pioneering cinematographer Edwin S. Porter, offer a vibrant glimpse into the birth of American cinema. Highlights include *Elopement on Horseback*, *Uncle Josh’s Nightmare*, *Terrible Teddy, Grizzly King*, *Love by the Light of the Moon*, and *Life of an American Fireman*. Also featured are stunning early panoramas like *Circular Panorama of Electric Tower* and *Panorama of Esplanade by Night*, and the poignant *Martyred President*. Presented with live or recorded musical accompaniment, this program celebrates the visual storytelling innovations of cinema’s earliest years.
