This film follows Kurt Anderson, an American Olympic hopeful whose career is jeopardized when he admits to having been a professional skier, disqualifying him from the amateur games. He forms a friendship with Joseph Gorky, a Hungarian skier, and Eva Knutson, a Norwegian skier. Their interactions reveal underlying tensions between capitalist and communist ideologies, particularly concerning the Olympic spirit and individual beliefs versus national loyalty. Joseph wins a gold medal but is troubled by an incident where he believes he fouled an opponent. Kurt, despite his own disqualification, emphasizes the importance of honesty and conscience over winning, leaving Joseph with a booklet of Christian teachings that challenges his worldview. The film concludes with Kurt accepting a silver medal and reflecting on the profound differences in values between East and West, while promoting a Christian message of spiritual fulfillment.
