A young Filipino boy, Alvares Lamino, is beaten up by other boys at a playground for wanting to join their baseball game. The incident comes to the attention of Carl Fischer, a local drugstore owner, who helps Alvares and his mother. Fischer is deeply disturbed by the xenophobia and writes a letter to the local newspaper to raise awareness. This prompts a reporter, Joe Turner, to investigate. Turner initially dismisses the incident as a minor scuffle between children, but Carl challenges his perspective, emphasizing the harmful underlying prejudice. It is revealed that Turner’s own son was among the boys who attacked Alvares. Through Carl’s persistence and the revelation that Alvares’ deceased father was a decorated American soldier, Turner begins to understand the gravity of the situation and the importance of brotherhood and acceptance, ultimately leading to a shift in his perspective and a powerful series of articles.
