Georgia Sea Island Singers (1963)
Presents Negro spirituals, sung in pure form as they were a century ago on St. Simon’s Island off the coast of Georgia. Introduces each song with explanatory titles and then several women sing them unaccompanied. Reflects the native African heritage and spiritual values of the people expressed in the dissonant harmony and rhythm when the songs are supplemented by broom handle rhythm, tambourine, and dancing.
