The film centers on Paul, a young man returning from college, whose embrace of liberal ideas clashes with his father’s conservative views, leading to heated arguments about communism and political ideology. Paul’s aunt, Julia, a devout Christian, tries to guide him, while Greta, a refugee who escaped from East Berlin, shares her harrowing experiences of life under communist rule. Greta’s story, particularly her brother’s death while attempting to flee, deeply impacts Paul, forcing him to re-evaluate his beliefs and the true nature of freedom and faith, ultimately leading him to question the compatibility of communism and Christianity.
