What Mary Jo Wanted (1982)
This film follows Mary Joe, a young black girl with an immense passion for dogs. After persistently expressing her desire for a dog, her parents eventually relent and allow her to get a puppy. Mary Joe names him Teddy, and while she is excited to care for him, she soon discovers the significant challenges and sleepless nights that come with raising a puppy, particularly his nighttime crying. After trying various methods to soothe Teddy, she eventually brings him into her own room, where he finally settles down. The experience teaches Mary Joe about responsibility and leads to a heartwarming bond with her new pet, even helping her develop a new sense of helpfulness around the house.
