Three Herding Societies (1982)

The film explores the herding traditions of three distinct cultures: the Laps in northern Finland, the Ketua Indians in Peru, and the Maasai in Kenya. The Laps rely on reindeer for survival, utilizing every part of the animal for food, clothing, and shelter, while facing modern challenges as younger generations prefer urban jobs. The Ketuas have herded llamas and alpacas for over 2,500 years, integrating both herding and limited farming into their lifestyle, with community weaving practices. The Maasai, who have herded cattle for a millennium, depend entirely on their livestock for sustenance and cultural practices. Despite their geographical and cultural differences, all three societies share a deep connection to their animals and face the pressures of modernization.
