On January 23, 1960, the bathyscaphe Trieste made history by reaching the deepest known point of the Earth’s oceans, the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench. The dive, which lasted approximately 8.5 hours, saw scientists and Navy personnel descend to a record-breaking depth of 37,800 feet. This groundbreaking achievement allowed for unprecedented study of the deep-sea environment, including temperature, currents, and biological samples. The mission also aimed to test new equipment and techniques for deep-sea exploration, with the potential for military applications and insights into dumping radioactive waste. Despite the extreme conditions and the discovery of life at such depths, including a fish and a sole, the dive was largely uneventful, though the occupants experienced cold temperatures and the unusual sight of a fine silt cloud upon landing.
